After 10+ years of studying classical voice and choral music education, I had forgotten why I loved to sing in the first place. So my ancestors led me to research my story of adoption, family separation, and intergenerational trauma. They reminded me that singing was my healing medicine, and more people in the world needed to sing.
This led me to develop a decolonial trauma-informed vocal pedagogy for self-led healing and collective world building for those who have been historically marginalized and silenced.

Meet Dr. Kiki
Voice Alchemist + Birth Justice Doula + Somatic-Spiritual Practitioner
Dr. Kiernan "Kiki" Steiner, D.M.A. (she/they/siya) is a Ilokano-Filipinx voice alchemist, full-spectrum birth justice doula, and somatic-spiritual practitioner who is passionate about the intersection of vocal liberation and reproductive justice. Dr. Kiki was born, transracially adopted, and raised on Ho-Chunk Nation lands in the rolling hills of Southwestern Wisconsin, which set the stage for her personal journey to find community and healing through music. Her ancestors are from the Ilocos and Central Luzon region in the Philippines, Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, and Switzerland.
In 2021, Dr. Kiki received their doctorate in choral conducting and decolonizing choral music education from Arizona State University where they began to develop a decolonized approach to vocal and choral teaching practices. Through all of their offerings, Dr. Kiki intuits ancestral wisdom and blends somatic-spiritual practices with scientific knowledge of the voice, which they have coined “our soul's unique frequency,” to regulate the nervous system, strengthen the voice/inner voice, and to activate creativity through releasing shame around the voice. Their highest calling is to provide radical somatic-spiritual care to parents, educators, and caregivers as she believes we must embody and practice liberation in order to achieve collective liberation.
In March 2023, Dr. Kiki became a certified full spectrum birth justice doula (Sokana Collective) sponsored by BIPOC for Better Birth. Her vision is to help equip mothers and birthing people with the knowledge of the voice, nervous system, and pelvic floor, in addition to providing childbirth education and labor support, so that they can have the birth of their dreams!
She now resides on occupied Peoria and Kickapoo lands in central Illinois where she can be found cooking Filipino and Hawaiian cuisine, learning how to garden, and tending to their ABC—adoptive, biological, and chosen—family.
Calling and Vision
My divine calling is:
to guide and teach others to wield the power of their voice for self-led healing and connection to Self + Kapwa(Community) in order to support collective creativity and world building.
My vision is to
share my decolonial trauma-informed vocal practices to inspire others to experience pleasure + play with their voice through singing,
in order to regulate their nervous system, learn about our energetic bodies (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual), tell their story,
and build stronger and deeper connections with their ancestors, dreams, community, and intuition as an act of resistance to colonial powers that depend on our disconnection and silence.
